The past week has been one of the most tiring weeks that I’ve had in a very, very long time. I had the “privilege” of being the on-call person for my department. That involves being the person that people come to with production issues during business hours, and it also involves being the holder of the ever annoying iPhone that loudly alerts you of issues as they happen during off hours, usually in the middle of the night.
Most of these pages involve production issues that need to be resolved ASAP. And most of these issues are things that I’ve had no idea how to fix. It’s been trial by fire to say the least. And as sleep deprived as I am at the moment I have to say that I’ve learned a ton this past week. I’ve also learned how great some of my co-workers can be about helping someone out when the need arises.
In the middle of all the work hoopla I almost missed the fact that my blog was getting more than ten times it’s normal amount of traffic last Friday. Now granted, my blog doesn’t exactly get a ton of traffic to begin with, but 10x the normal amount is kind of a big deal no matter how small the blog. And it happened on a Friday no less!
I eventually traced the surge in traffic to a couple of big Pinterest users who pinned my post Tips for Traveling in Europe. I’ve never mentioned it before here on the blog, but I have one post that’s gone “viral” on Pinterest, and it’s that one. It drives most of the traffic to my blog outside of those of you who are subscribed.
Traffic was really high for the next couple days, and it’s been slowing down, although today it was still 4 times my normal amount with almost all of my hits coming in on that one post. And even though most of those people may not become regular readers of my blog, it’s still exciting to know that I wrote a blog post that appears to be highly useful to people. On Saturday the post was re-pinned almost as many times as it was viewed, which means a very high percentage of people find it worth saving. It is one of my favorite posts that I’ve ever written, so that’s just the cherry on top.
Something else that I’m particularly excited about is that I have a new blog design in the works. I started tweaking the new design last week and had to put that project on the back burner because of being on the pager this week, but I’m pretty excited about it so that will motivate me to get it done. Hopefully you’ll be seeing the new design sooner rather than later.
Stay tuned for the reveal of the new design!
